Today, unbelievably, is my daughter's 19th birthday. Gad, how can that be? I'd better check the calendar again.Crap.
*I* don't feel any different than I did nearly two decades ago. Well, other than I'm a lot thinner. Yep, the years have flown past.
Flown? More like flashed past me at the frickin' speed of light.
I always chuckled at my parents telling me the exact same thing (well, without using expletives as far as I know)... about how fast the years go. One day, perhaps daughter will continue the tradition by reciting those very same words to her child. And maybe HER kid won't roll her eyes at her.
But probably not.
Rolling eyes aside, I will admit I am so lucky to have such a close relationship with my daughter. I can see so many of my traits (all good) and some of hubby's (all bad, natch) rolled up into one person.
We have pretty good conversations too; except for a recent one. I have no qualms in declaring this *The Most Confusing Conversation Ever. I was trying to remember an actor's name and I just couldn't grasp the right words. Obviously.
TMCCE*:
Me: You know, whathisname.
Daughter: Who?
Me: That guy, you know, from that show.
Daughter:
Me: He also went out with whatzherface.
Daughter:
Me: Oh nevermind.
Yep, I guess I have to admit it. I *AM* getting older too.
Dammit.
Congratulations on your daughter's 19th birthday! How lucky you are to have such a close relationship with her. I'm very close to my mom NOW but it wasn't always that way. Those rocky years make me even more grateful for our friendship today.

ReplyDeleteI envy your relationship w/ her though. My mom and I have been at odds and loggerheads my entire life, which is why I moved to the west coast to get as far away from her as possible w/o leaving the lower 48.

Seriously - a wonderful thing! Don't worry about those senior moments...umm - they only get worse from here. Say you are thinner now that before, I wish. As I have gotten older I've been pushing it the otherway around.

Nothing like our kids advancing ages to remind us of how old we are too. Now we have to worry about their birthdays acting as a reminder as well as our own.

ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday to your daughter. It does go fast doesn't it? My eldest will also be 19 in August. We have had some tulmultuous times in the past. But now as we have both grown up(i've grown old) he is my little (big, he's bigger than me now) rock even though he will always be my little boy. :)

Some jewelry she wanted to get herself, but put back... then when she returned to the store to get them on the final day there, they were gone! (into my purse; I had snuck back and purchased them... ha!) Awesome that you would think of that!

You know, if you have a good relationship with a nineteen year old daughter, or a son, then you have truly discovered the secret of a long life.
I have three daughters and one son. One daughter hates me. One daughter loves me to death. And one daughter is totally indifferent. And my son said he'd like to travel if I leave him anything after I die. So guess who gets the biggest Birthday presents from good old dad? LOL.
My Queen says they are all special little darlings in their own way. I guesso.
