I Forgive You

Each Spring, I eagerly anticipate the traditional trips to the local garden store to stock up on all my flower and veggie plants. I carefully choose (okay, maybe not THAT carefully - I usually scoop up whatever pretty thing catches my eye) plants that will survive both the full sun (we have very little NO shade in our back yard) and the voracious appetite of our local family of wild rabbits.

Amongst the dozens of annuals and herbs I adopt, I always snag some bright orange and yellow Marigolds; listed at the garden store to be "Rabbit - Resistant".

Obviously MY rabbits can't read.... and obviously I can't remember.

My rabbits LOVE Marigolds.

So it's not surprising that mere days after planting, I have a wonderful, neat row of Marigold stems to adore and admire whilst relaxing on the deck. Sans flowers and most of the foliage, that is.

Doh!

But I forgive the cute bunnies; they're cheap (er, the plants, not the rabbits, that is) and with a simple move of the planter to higher ground they'll grow back.

After all, the poor rabbits have been enduring weather that's been Hell On Earth as we fry in temperatures like this lately:

That's right; with the humidity, it was 117 F (47 C) out there Tuesday. After watering all my charges which were now almost as wet as I was (covered in sweat within nanoseconds), I could barely breathe before dashing back inside to stand, arms extended,  in front of the air conditioner on full blast in a vain attempt to cool down.

Holy Freaking Heck.

So I not only forgive them their mischievous snacking, I put out some bowls of water along with their seeds and berry mix at the entrance of their home under our deck.

It's not like they can reach the bird bath that's been THE popular spot with our feathered friends this week; because if they figured out how to get up there, ALL my flowers and herbs would be doomed for sure.

And that would be a tad harder to forgive.

I am not adjusting to this heat and humidity on the east coast at all. It's been stinkin hot since I arrived on July 2 with no end in sight. Oh how I miss the cold, wet summers of the Pacific NW. On the other hand, my squeeze promised me a/c and delivered: The day we arrived, he got and installed 2 window units that keep our small rental home very cool and comfy. Needless to say, I venture outside only when absolutely necessary. Stay cool!

Ugh. I'm sorry that Houston sent you its heat. We are tired of it, too, in north Texas, although it is much drier. It's bad when it keeps coming at you day after day after day.

Oh, like your winters.

:)

I make a lot of donations at the garden center each year, too.

What I want to know is, why can't the weather just find some happy medium across the country and then we all get a nice summer? Most of Canada (and probably the whole rest of the world - not that I would ever exaggerate) is super-hot and humid, but in Vancouver, it rained all last night and now the sun is trying to peek through the clouds and it's only about 14ÂșC. It's just not fair!

Holy crap that is HOT!! We usually get a few days like that here in the summer but it's been an abnormally mellow summer.

I am lucky to be an Indoor, air-conditioned kitty! I'm glad the bunnies get a delicious snack.

I really couldn't bare temperatures like that. Makes me glad to be in England - even though we moan about our weather.

I'm so glad you look after your bunnies :)

It's definitely that hot here too during summer. The heat is just unbearable.

P.S. Your template is really REALLY cute. I never get tired looking at it.

Our wild rabbits would only eat gourmet rabbit food and not the cheaper pellets I put out one winter. They leave my flowers alone but eat my neighbours, which incidentally, are the same as my own. Good rabbits!

We're disgustingly hot in Ottawa too. Looks like you have to head out to Vancouver or Victoria for some relief!

Bah...it regularly gets to 115 degrees (for real, no Humidex) where I live in Arizona. You get used to it.

Good grief!! That's a wicked temperature! And if you sweat so quickly, I'm guessing it must be horribly humid, too. The worst combination!

Sorry about the poor marigolds. The same thing usually happens to us and we don't have rabbits - what, with two greyhounds in the garden? LOL!! In our case it's caterpillars or insects, or sometimes the birds, who delight in eating the buds and new leaves for some reason.
