Trained Well... Perhaps TOO Well

She's the best in the house - ever since she was weeks old when she was trained to play her favorite game.

And this past Christmas Santa brought new toys to delight her once again.

For she loves to play fetch.

I'll find myself sitting at the computer and she'll drop her red ball at my feet, giving my toes a gentle tap with her paw to let me know it's my turn to throw it.

Or I'll be watching TV and she'll saunter into the room, placing her new toy into my lap, ready for another game.

Sometimes she'll ask hubby to play; sometimes me. When one of us gets tired of throwing it (far sooner than she gets tired of retrieving it), she'll ask the other one to play.

Oh, you didn't think I was talking about our dog did you?

Um nope.

Dakotah is the Queen Of Fetch in our home. Yep, she's so cute carrying her favorite fuzzy, sparkly red ball all around the house looking for someone to play with. If a tap to my foot doesn't work, she'll meow to tell me to pay attention.

CUTE

The dog just sits and watches. Usually smack in the middle of the action, so Dakotah will  jump over the dog if she gets in the path of the throw. And the dog just lies there with a dumb look like she has no idea what the heck is going on. (Oh yes, we tried training the dog to fetch, but she never really caught on....)

CUTE
CUTE TOO

Yep, Dakotah's trained well. Actually, perhaps TOO well, for she started bringing her ball into bed in the middle of the night.

Like at 5 am on New Year's Day when I refused to play (silly me, I just wanted to sleep off New Year's Eve!) so she began lobbing it up in the air for herself:

NOT CUTE. NOPE. NOT AT ALL.

So now, much to her utter disappointment, her ball gets confiscated at bedtime.

Now I have to train her in the difference between "play time" and "bed time".

Yeah, I know.

Good luck with THAT.

SNORT! You are a much better person than I! The ball would have gone flying out the window!! I am so not a morning person!! I have to shit my cats downstairs at night as one likes to sit on heads and the other snores.

It's easier to keep them away from any bedroom so they don't wake children who would then come to me and want to stay up!

I have tried to teach my little dog to fetch. She brings the ball back to me the first time I throw it, but as soon as I bend down to get the ball, she grabs it and runs away. She does this every time. It is a short game of fetch.

Have a cat that barks and plays tug of war and fetch with a baby mitten. No I didn't train it. He came that way.

That's so sweet. Too bad they can't tell time or read a calendar!

That's adorable! I'm more of a dog person than a cat person, but I get such a kick when I hear of a cat behaving in a more dog-like manner. Great photos, too!

Oh My Gosh! My wee scamp of a kitty cat Bella plays fetch too. And she brings the toy she wants to play with all times of the the day and night. She even digs her favourite toys out of her toy basket.

Our kitties must be twins.

Thanks for sharing your crazy kitty.

P.S. Love your blog!

Dakotah, you are smart and cute! Harley likes to drag his toys to bed in the middle of the night, too.

Dakotah and my Amber should meet, as our feline is the same way, only with socks that have been washed and balled up. She will bring them down stairs in hopes that someone will toss the "laundry" for her to play with.

Middleagedcrazywoman: Well, as I lay in the darkness after just two hours of sleep, I WAS tempted to chuck the ball. But then Dakotah just would have brought it back ;) That first night I just hid it under my pillow. Now I put it in a drawer where she can't find it.

Belle: Ahahahaha! Oh who trained WHO? Hilarious!

Lizzy: Barks? No way! I would LOVE if my cat was bilingual. Or I guess she would be trilingual. She is the only one of our cats who really seems to communicate to us humans.

Reforming Geek: Yeah! I must teach her how to use my Mickey Mouse watch. It has a calendar on it too.

Richard: Gee, I hope you're not married... ;) 5 am on January 1st is just two hours after bedtime!

Carmar76: Ha! Yeah, who says cats can't be taught? She's smarter than our dog.

Thanks Pinklea! I think I am more a cat person. Although I love all animals, and own a dog, I get a kick out of all three of our cats. Each has such a distinct personality.

Ahahaha Kristine! Yeah, it's so funny to watch them dig, dig, dig, until they find the one toy they were looking for. Of course that's not until every other one is strewn about the livingroom floor. Aw, and thank you for popping by!

Oh Daisy! That Harley is mischevious too eh? I am not surprised. Sounds like your mom needs a locking toy chest too ;)

Aw Kisma, that's too cute! Even though Dakotah is 6, she turns into a kitten when that ball is out. Yours sounds the same!

Awwwww, that's so adorable!!!! "Pway wiff me NAO!"

Both our dogs love to play fetch, although Pepper only uses it as a ruse to get me on the floor where she promptly goes into belly rub position!

My Abby used to play fetch. and demand that you played with her. now she seems to want me to fetch for her (bring me my food, I'm too tired to get off your bed...). though she is not at the demanding stage, yet.

Oh cats that play fetch are so cute! We trained our cat to fetch sticks - and she did! The garden canes were light enough for her, and usually about 18 inches long. It was hilarious when she came strutting to us, cane in mouth and walked under our gate-legged table! Eventually she learned to tilt her head so she could get the cane through!

You must try that :)

So adorable! She has you well trained! :)

This cracks me up! We have a black cat that seems to have the same personality as your's. She LVOES to play and a few years ago we had to start putting her toys away before we went to bed.

That is so cute! OK, maybe not so much in the middle of the night... Still, smart kitty!!

I'm not really a cat person but that's one cute cat...and a funny post, thanks!

Wish my cat would play fetch. When I throw her toy, she just stares at me lol. The only thing I was able to train her to do was to "shake" my hand when I say hello...that took about 1.5 hours. Good luck with trying to teach her the difference between play time & bed time. :)

Haha Lady Banana! But how can you resist such a cutie? I know I would find it hard.

Jo-Jo: Har! Ulterior motives, eh? They're smarter than us at times...

Violet Sky: Yes, we DO fetch for them don't we? Hmmm never thought of it that way!

Awwwwww... Babs, I can just PICTURE that! How sweet! But we keep our cats inside. It's bad enough chasing them around the house; I'd hate to do that around our yard.

Janet: Yes, she does. Reminded me of your Lily and her puffballs!

Ahahaha Megan! They say is is good luck to OWN a Black Cat. She definitely is the smartest of the bunch.

;) Heather. Yeah. Cute in daytime. Nightime? Not so much.

Thank YOU Lazarus! She's not a "typical" cat, that's for sure!

Aw, Anahid, I would LOVE to teach her to shake-a-paw! I know I could never get the dog to figure it out... ;)

My cats do the same thing! Bedtime is their cue to bring every toy they own up on to our bed and play with them. When we wake up in the morning there is a pile of toys at our feet. I may have to try that confiscation thing.

Hahahaha!! Yes, I confess - I did think you were talking about the dog! LOL!

She's very cute. I wonder what is so special about that red sparkly bit of fluff? Mice don't come in that colour, do they?

CUTE! My cats are retarded and only bring us shoes and socks. They won't play fetch with us--rather, whenever they feel the need, they'll just drag our shoes and socks all around the house. I think I'd prefer your kitty at the moment. :)

Our cat has recently been watching the clock and waking us up at 4:45am almost to the minute because she says she's hungry. My husband HATES to be awakened but is too afraid of her to shut the door. I'm afraid of her, too. Your blog is hysterical.
