Guard Rat

The other day while at London Drugs wandering aimlessly around shopping for a few incidentals, I happened across the Back To School section. Or what was left of it that is - sparse remains picked over and strewn about, a sure sign that summer vacation was at an end. One lonely item on the bottom shelf caught my attention though; a solitary black Thermos "Lunch Lugger". Resembling a mini-cooler, it was perfect to house my Tupperware-encased lunches and keep them cold for an entire workday.

Which is exactly what I needed for my office, for an evil presence has raised its ugly head at work. Yes at a hospital, in our staff room, The Dreaded Lunch Burglar has brazenly attacked - nicking morsels from our department's fridge.

My meals, wrapped in plastic bags and labeled with my name in bold black Sharpie have been safe so far. I prefer to think it's because The Dreaded Lunch Burglar hasn't found mine hidden in the back yet, rather than the possible fact that my lunches may very well suck.

But I'm not waiting to find out. My food is now safe, sound and cold in my office.

Ha! Take THAT, Dreaded Lunch Burglar... you'll not pilfer my Lunch Lugger. Not while Guard Rat is faithfully protecting it.

Grrrrr!

I despise the lunchroom thieves. We had them at my office, too.

Bringing in packed lunches was not something I've ever known done during my working life. Everybody went out and bought their lunch at a sandwich bar or ate out in a snack bar. We were all too keen to get out of the office for an hour ;)
It's a sweet little cooler bag.

Love the little Guard Rat!

I like the guard rat! We are losing so many of our staff, there is no one left to nick lunches.

Irene said...

You mean you actually have someone stealing people's lunches in your office? How low can you get? Have you thought about placing a camera there to catch the thief?

AshPup said...

Hahaha, yes we had a burglar around here too actually- finally caught her, a girl from god knows where who somehow knew when we would all be out of lab in seminar so she could steal our stuff unnoticed. Unbelievable!
Thanks for the fb message, I've been real busy with celebrating and then catching up, but I guess summer is nearly over and everything will go back to "normal" again soon. :o(

Lunch thieves are everywhere! That's why I've been keeping my lunch in an insulated bag in my office for years. Also my favourite cup. So of course, the only time food was stolen from me was when I had chocolate tucked away in one of my desk drawers. Bastards!

Excited to see what you come up with. :)

It's unbelievable that people would do this - and it would put me off my lunch to know that someone (with heaven knows what kind of personal hygiene habits) had had their grubby little fingers in my food. I honestly wouldn't be able to eat it.

JoJo said...

I swear to god, people who eat other people's food is one of my biggest pet peeves ever. I don't get it at all. Did they confuse their lunch with someone else's? I mean seriously, who the frick does that???

JennyMac said...

Guard rat is fierce. I wouldnt mess with him. But then again, he wouldnt be interested in me since I don't nab people's vittles. LOL.

Louise said...

Of COURSE it's not because your lunches suck. Must say that is a coooool bag.

Badass Geek: The Dreaded Lunch Burglar can strike at anytime, anywhere.

Babs-beetle: Oh, I rarely eat out. I can probably count on two hands over nearly 30 years, the times I haven't brought my own lunch. I can't imagine paying the exhorbitant costs they charge for food at the hospital. It's ridiculous really. I feel sorry for visitors and family who HAVE to eat there.

Sistertex: Ha! Guard Rat was purchased on our last trip to the Mall of America. One store I always visit on every trip is "The Afternoon". It has the funkiest stuff... and something I have been collecting from there (I have three now... so I can call it a "collection") are these animals made from tools and nails, bicycle chains, etc. all recycled and made into art. They are soooo cool.

Tara: Ah, the ONLY good thing from a sad state of affairs...

The Green Stone Woman: Yep. A Burglar in our midst. I prefer to just to be proactive and remove my stuff altogether rather than worry about who it is. Luckily for me, I have my own private office and believe me, I keep it locked whenever I'm not there.

Ashley: Holy crap! They caught her! Awesome! Yes, Happy Belated Birthday Ashley... indeed everything will soon be "normal" once more.

Pinklea: Chocolate Thief!!! That's even worse!!!! Bastards indeed! Yeah, the only time I go into the staff room now is to wash up my dishes or to get water for my coffeemaker.

Sistertex: Oh crap! Er, I mean Oh Goody!!! ;) I shall check it out... thank you!

Jay: Exactly. Who knows WHAT goes on??? I prefer to keep an eye on my stuff. I know I come across as anti-social; but I really can't stand sharing the eating area with loud, obnoxious slobs. You wouldn't believe the state they leave that room in some days. Gross.

Jo-Jo, I don't get it at all either. Who would think that it's a free-for-all when they open the fridge??? I was just appalled. I think some people are so spoiled or self-absorbed that they don't even realize how wrong it is.

Jenny Mac: He IS fierce. With real steel nails for whiskers, The Dreaded Lunch Burglar better watch out!

Aw, thank you Louise! I will say, my lunches consist mostly of yummy salads with mixed greens and sprouts, some raw veges, yogurt, fruit and milk. Yesterday I also brought (as pictured) home-made banana bread with peanut butter. So it's healthy... but Burglars aren't known to be health-conscious you know.

I think those lunch bandits are everywhere. It's crazy. And they will pick thru stuff looking for the "good" stuff.

We have a lunch thief too! The sad part is everyone knows who it is and he still does it!! Lucky for me he's never stolen my food. Probably because it's never too exciting lol.

Wow - I always thought the Lunch Burgler was a mystical beast only seen in tv shows! But apparently he/she really exists! (I bet it's a he). I'm with babs - we go out for lunch.

Anyway, a lugger? I guess that's not pronounced looooger LOL And I love that rat!

JC said...

I don't know what would be worse, having a lunch bandit in the office, or having a lunch that a bandit wouldn't touch!! ;o)

"The Dreaded Lunch Burglar", ahahah I love it. My wife fell pray to it at work on a few occasions, too. I had no idea it was so widespread.

DJ Kirkby said...

Lunchroom burglers, I mean seriously now, desperate do you have to be, to steal food from hospital staff?

Heather said...

I've blogged about this a couple of times. Some one in our tiny office has taken my food (labeled with my name on it) from our fridge on multiple occasions. It drives me crazy!!!

From the Old InkWell said...

Don't you hate that! Hopefully, your coworkers read your blog and the scoundrel will feel quilty!

Maureen:

We had one of those lunch burglars at our office once. I could never understand it. I mean, the audacity to steal someone's lunch. Plus, I'm a big germ freak, so I don't eat things prepared by others.

You should have packed a tidbit for the thief---something that looks tempting, but tastes ghastly.

Happy trails.

There are ways to deal with a lunchroom thief. Just sayin. When you see someone spending a lot of time in the bathroom you may have caught them. It is easier to have your lunch right there all handy and everything though.

Cupcake Blonde said...

We have lunch room thieves as well. I have sent out many a nasty email to those who stole my dinner. Now we have cameras in our lunch rooms, which is sad.

I love your rat! Where can I get a guard rat?

P.S. I finally posted on my blog. :)

Well, I have now officially soiled myself. Thanks for nothing, Guard Rat. :P

Grrrr...we have those at our place too.....

Reforming Geek: It really amazes me some people have the nerve to do this... to people they work with!

Mom Julie Taxi: They know??? And no-one DOES or SAYS anything to him? Incredible.

Drowsey Monkey: Yes, he/she really does exist. And by the sound of these comments, they are multiplying at an alarming rate! I heart my Guard Rat too ;)

Ha Ha JC! You, sir are right! I'll bet ours isn't a vegetarian...

Jerome: I had no idea either! I think the international marketing of Guard Rats is needed. Badly.

DJKirby: I know... desperate indeed. Dastardly and desperate.

Heather: Unreal. Sounds like YOU need a Lunch Lugger and Guard Rat too.

Marsha: Oh Gad! I hope they DON'T find my blog!!!!

Swubird: Oh so tempting, SO tempting....

Ettarose: It IS easier and more peaceful to have everything in my own little room at work. Some of the conversations people have in that staff room just boggles my mind. I have better ways to waste my time than listening to drivel.

Yes, it is sad, Vegas Princess, that we have to mount cameras to protect what is ours; even lunches! Oh, Guard Rat is unique; I bought him at a store called The Afternoon in the Mall of America; but even if you find a similar model, each one is slightly different!

Ha Ha Tony! (sorry about that)

Toners: Amazing how many people think this is an acceptable behaviour....

Janet said...

Stylish AND safe! Have you set about to identify this mysterious thief? Methinks a hidden camera is in order.

Maureen said...

Janet: No, the culprit hasn't been ID'd, but I don't care anymore; they can't steal anything from me now!

Jill said...

I hope your lunch stays safe! I haven't had anyone take my lunch yet, but it's happened anywhere I've worked. I don't know why. I think the labeling helps a lot. People either don't like taking from someone when they know whose it is, or maybe they were never taking in the first place but just happened to clean out the fridge at an inopportune time. It's a sad mystery.

Thanks Lady Banana! Yeah, he IS cute... and fierce! ;)
