A Lucky Omen

It happened four days ago.

I was uncharacteristically running ahead of schedule that morning; which allowed me the extreme pleasure of driving into work on nearly deserted roads.

As I turned from the highway into the suburbs, a flash at the corner of my right eye caught my attention. A golden-yellow blur was rushing from the grassy clearing and was on a direct course to cross my path. Believing it to be a Retriever or large Labrador leaping in great strides, I slowed to avoid a collision.

But as I approached, I gasped. It was a deer. A very large and majestic Doe.

Since there was no one else around, I honked in short bursts to gently warn her. She came to an abrupt halt right at the side of the road in front of me; with just meters separating us, we stared at each other as three yearling does appeared from nowhere to gallop up and stand behind her.

The blogger in me yearned to pull out my camera, but as it was pitch black outside I didn't want to scare the four beautiful creatures. Instead I sat and admired the pack as they blinked and padded the ground. Regretfully I slowly continued on to work.

So you'll just have to be satisfied with this "artist's interpretation" instead of a photo:

With a huge smile, I couldn't help but think it was going to be a good day.

Then about four hours later, I happened to win tickets to this weekend's very important Blue Bomber football game:

Yup, my lucky number just to happens to be 4.

How'd you guess?

Awww, your illustration is just as lovely as the real thing. You are so talented! And free bomber tix, lucky indeed! Have fun!

I think your drawing is probably sweeter than a photo would have been.
I also once almost ran into a deer - in the suburbs - the whole dang family came out onto the road to watch me watch them. I was still feeling excited goosebumps hours later over it.

Enjoy the game.

Wow did you draw that? You are very talented! Nice, very nice. We have wildlife (a lot of deer) wandering around our house all the time. My favorite sights are when I see a buck (don't see as many of them as does)with a large rack, the also the cute little ones....my favorite. I have been living with them for nearly 20 years and still never get tired of seeing them, they are such sweet, peaceful animals. They do tend to run out into the road suddendly though. We have to watch for them and wild turkeys ALL the time any more. Your drawing was very very nice!

As I read your story I couldn't help but think of a movie I saw once. It was called Star Man and starred Jeff Bridges. Only, in that movie he saved a deer's life. It was a touching scene and one of the most moving movie moments I have ever seen.

Happy trails.

Wow I need to see them because I could use some good luck right about now. Congrats on your good luck.

Irony at its best. This is the first weekend of deer season.

Your illustration is beautiful!

I saw the "four" last year, when it was dry and they were coming out of the woods to look for water in my bird bath. It was precious.

How come does are always majestic? What about the ones that sneak around and smash pumpkins or smoke cigs outside the 7-11?

Now I wouldn't care too much about football tickets but to see those beautiful creatures all up close would be something very special :)

Amazing artists impression!

Thanks Ashley! It was fun, even if they DID lose... drat!

VioletSky: Well, thank you! It was a rush to see the deer; so close up and beautiful.

Sistertex: Yes, I drew it and coloured it in with my new Copic markers; I am still practicing with them. I must admit I thought of you when this happened... I saw your wonderful deer photos as well. So cool that you have them so close as well!

Oh Swubird: A man after my very heart. How did you know that Starman is one of my all time favorite movies? I get all teary-eyed at the deer part; and you are right... when I was so close to her, it was just like the feeling you had when Jeff brings that hunter's prey back to life. That movie was just on TV a couple of weeks back too!

Thank you Margaret, may good luck find you too.

Thanks Heather!

Aw Reforming Geek, it WAS a precious sight, especially when most people think that they are only around for killing. I don't understand how anyone could shoot animals...

Yes, Daisy, I am so lucky! I shall never forget it that's for sure!

Aw, thanks Vegas Princess. And I just popped by; I think I need to start pricing plane tickets to Vegas! ;) Unfortunately, even the Good Omen deer couldn't help our team; they lost, but we still had a good time!

VE: DOES are majestic. DON'TS are the ones who hang out at the Sev.

Jo-Jo: Thank you! Ah yes, the Lions. Well, at least your team was indeed better than ours this year... gah.

It was a lucky day Lady Banana! I have never won anything thru Twitter before, so that was cool.

Thank you Babs. I knew hubby would want to see the game and we haven't been to a live football game in decades, so it was a fun outing. Because of Remembrance Day today, they had special ceremonies for our military; including a fly over by real bombers and jet fighters, army, navy and airforce personnel in the stands, and a special competition between the three arms of the forces at halftime. So even though our team lost, the day was fun and the weather unseasonably warm.
